Tip trim is a specification, not a suggestion
A golf shaft length calculator for clubmakers has to refuse a temptation: auto-picking a “best” tip trim for launch and spin. GolfWorks and every serious shaft company publish trimming instructions as separate technical documents because flex, bend profile, and warranty live there. This site will not invent a tip cut. You type the manufacturer number, or you type zero and the warning reminds you to confirm it.
Butt trim is the residual after tip trim and the geometry that makes playing length. Playing length uses your intended USGA-style length. Insertion depth is how far the shaft sits in the hosel or adapter. Tip-to-playing-plane is the distance from the installed shaft tip to the 60-degree length station — a small geometry input, not a personality quiz. Final shaft = playing length + insertion − tip-to-plane − grip overhang. Butt trim = raw − tip trim − final shaft.
Cut-mass estimate
If you only know raw mass and raw length, the remaining spine is a uniform-mass estimate: mass scales with remaining length. That is labelled Estimate because real taper-tip iron shafts are not uniform rods. When you weigh the cut shaft, override the mass and the badge can become a measured shaft weight in the Lab.

BBGM and other geometry notes
Some shafts quote balance point or “BBGM.” First version still defaults to uniform density for the cut estimate unless you override mass. Do not confuse that estimate with a frequency or EI profile. Frequency is out of scope; this is a length and first-moment workshop.

Do you recommend a tip trim?
No. Enter the manufacturer specification. The calculator will not pick a 'best' tip trim.
What if butt trim goes negative?
The raw blank is too short for that playing length after the specified tip trim. You will see a warning.
Are adapters included?
Adapter mass lives on the head/adapter fields in the Lab. This page is the shaft cut plan only.
