How the 14-inch scale works

A finished golf club is a first-moment problem. Place the fulcrum fourteen inches from the butt. Multiply total mass by the distance from that fulcrum to the balance point. Convert that torque onto the Lorythmic alphabet. One point is 1.75 ounce-inches, about 50 gram-inches. D0 sits at 213.5 ounce-inches. A 423 g iron balancing at 29.25 inches is a typical worked example; change either input and the letter moves.

Adding mass ahead of the 14-inch fulcrum raises swingweight; adding mass behind it lowers swingweight. The size of the change depends on the exact distance: one point is 1.75 oz·in (about 49.6 g·in) of moment. The engine always uses the actual moment.

What the range is for

A kitchen scale that jumps two grams, or a balance mark you only trust to a quarter inch, will fake a confidence the hardware does not have. This page asks for scale ±g and balance ±inches and prints a range instead of a single theatrical letter. Analog swingweight scales have their own quirks. A reconstruction from mass and balance has different errors. The interval is the honest part.

Do not average the two. Shops get into trouble when a customer’s “D2” was a model and the scale says something else after epoxy and a ferrule nobody entered.

Measure an assembled club here, then carry the result into the Bench for scenarios and set matching. Balance point is measured from the butt end of the grip. Playing length for woods and irons should follow the 60-degree sole convention if you care about matching a length ruler.
